Marine returns home to Texas to final resting place
Updated: 11/4/2009 7:43 PM
By: Russell Wilde

Lockhart residents showed support for Lance Cpl. Cody Stanley, who died in Afghanistan.
With balloons, ribbons and hundreds of flags, Lockhart paused to remember a fallen hero.

"We stand together, we're a community and whether we know the person or not, we're united," Beth Salazar said.

Salazar owns a business on Lockhart's Square, and Wednesday morning she paused to show her support for Lance Cpl. Cody Stanley and his family.

"It's something that we need to do as Americans, support our soldiers," she said.

By the time the procession reached downtown, hundreds had gathered to remember the 21-year-old Marine who died while serving in Afghanistan.

"As far as I'm concerned he's a hero, an American hero. He died for all of us, and I just feel like he needs to be honored," Lockhart resident Sandra Evans said.

Fallen Soldier

News 8's Russell Wilde attended Stanley's funeral procession, and talked with those who wanted to honor him, even though they didn't know him.

Stanley went to grade school in Lockhart and has a lot of family in the area. While it's been more than a decade since he moved to Rosanky, Texas, Lockhart still considers him one of their own.

"We're still standing here even though he's lost, but he's still a fellow Marine," retired Marine J.D. Wright said.

And as a fellow Marine, Wright said the family's loss won't be forgotten.
Lance Cpl. Cody Stanley was a Marine.

"Marines will be there to stand by you, simple as that," he said.

As the hearse carried Lance Cpl. Stanley past the Caldwell County Courthouse one last time, a community came together to honor his sacrifice, and the sacrifice of all those who wear the uniform.

"As Americans we need to honor all those to those who serve us," Evans said.
