Foggy Start to Partly Sunny Day
A thick fall fog dropped visibility in parts of Austin to below a mile from 1am-9am, but lifted just in time for the big game with partly sunny skies warming us close to 80. Gray skies return tonight and hold thick through Sunday as disturbed weather from both the Pacific and Gulf take aim at Texas, resulting in a few showers and storms.
The calm weather maker we enjoyed all week, high pressure, continues to move east and, in its wake, an area of low pressure to treks across Mexico towards the Lone Star State. An inflow of moisture from the Gulf will provide plenty of "fuel" for showers, especially south.
Futurecast indicates thick clouds and fog turning to rain from our south by Sunday afternoon. But this latest model doesn't paint nearly as wet of a picture as we saw yesterday, for example. Keep in mind, it's still a fairly low 30% chance you'll see rain where you are, so don't cancel any plans just yet!
A cold front moving through the Rockies today arrives here early Tuesday, it appears, with a slim rain chance. Next week's weather also hinges on what happens in the Gulf...
Tropical Storm Ida strengthens again now that she's back over very warm waters in the northwest Caribbean (sat loop.) As of 11am, she's about 270 miles SE of Cozumel, moving north near 9mph, with sustained winds near 60mph. The official forecast shows she might make brief landfall in the Yucatan or Cuba, or maybe go right through the Yucatan Channel into the Gulf early next week. Then, upper-level winds are expected to curve Ida east. So the Central and East Gulf coast states will likely take more impact than Texas by midweek, but it certainly deserves our attention.
A stronger cold front will drop towards Texas with a possible arrival Friday into Saturday. Keep up with the latest details on the 8-day forecast.
Enjoy your Saturday. Meteorologist Burton Fitzsimmons
