Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo may decide sooner than previously expected if the officer who shot and killed an 18-year-old man in East Austin earlier this year will keep his job.
The shooting death of Nathaniel Sanders by on-duty Austin Police Senior Patrol Officer Leonardo Quintana May 11 caused controversy community-wide over whether or not the officer's use of weapon was necessary.
A high-placed Austin Police Department source said that a judicial review panel will recommend if Officer Leonardo Quintana should keep his job as early as Wednesday morning.
That same source also said that Chief Art Acevedo will make a final decision on the matter later the same day.
Previously, the decision wasn't supposed to be announced until Nov 6.

Concerned neighbors voiced their opinions on the issue Tuesday, calling on Acevedo to fire Quintana.
If he doesn't, they plan to take the matter to the federal government.
"The community needs to continue on and move forward to the Justice Department because there should be no peace in this community until justice is served," neighbor Michael Lofton said.
Quintana also wounded another man, Sir Smith, during the altercation.
Dash cam video from one of three police cruisers involved is the only video of the incident that exists--Quintana's camera was turned off.
Since the shooting, APD's internal investigation on the case was ruled biased by an independent review.
"We do not need corrupt police officers in this police department. Because if it happened this time and they're trying to cover it up or send little e-mails and messages out to their fellow officers to show them how to work it so that it will come out the way they want it to come out, they'll do it again," Sir Smith's mother, Verna Smith, said.
Those close to the internal investigation hint Quintana will keep his job, but nothing is definite until Chief Acevedo announces his decision.
