A new city ordinance went into effect Monday that gives cyclists, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users extra wiggle room.
The ordinance requires motorists to give at least three feet clearance when passing cyclists in the same lane.
Those in trucks and larger vehicles must allow six feet.
The Austin Police Department plans to be on the lookout for violators and will enforce the new rule.
The Austin City Council approved the measure last month to provide more of a reason to watch out for cyclists while driving Austin roads.
It also includes a public education campaign.
