San Marcos school officials suspended a 12-year-old after teachers found a gun in his backpack Tuesday.
A Maria Hernandez Intermediate School teacher became suspicious after several students gathered around the backpack.
The principal and another teacher took the sixth grader into a room to search it.
That's when they found a 38-caliber handgun and contacted police.
Police said the gun was unloaded but two bullets were found in the boy's pocket.
The boy faces expulsion for a year as well as third degree felony charges for carrying a weapon onto school property.
He has been detained at the Hays County Juvenile Detention Center.
Students and teachers at Hernandez Intermediate School received some extra safety training Wednesday.
Police are training all students in the district to be on the lookout for suspicious behavior.
"They know far more what's going on on campus and being aware, and that's part of the things we're going out and talking to all students in the district about,” San Marcos Police Sgt. Bob Klett said. “Students if you see this on campus please let us know, let somebody know so we can deal with it."
The district plans to hold meetings on other campuses in the near future.
Police said they are still investigating where the gun came from.
The person who provided the gun to the student could be charged with a misdemeanor.
