Cyclocross is taking central Texas by storm.
"It's just one of the coolest things in Austin," rider Stacy Liddle said.
Road riders created cyclocross to stay in shape during the off
season. The sport combines the best of two worlds using a bike that does the same.
"They aren't quite a mountain bike. They aren't quite a road
bike. The best way to describe it is it's a road bike with thicker meatier tires," rider Jacob Dodson said.
While a cyclocross bike is preferred, mountain bikes work just fine.
Riders say it's easy to describe how you feel when you take on the challenge.
"You feel like a kid again," Liddle said.
On Tuesdays, riders turn the Austin/Del Valle Motorcross Park
into their home. Riders say anyone can enjoy the experience.
"No dogs. No cars. And it's dirt," Liddle said. "It's a motorcross park so you look out and you see jumps but we don't really take bikes out to anything that's going to launch you. For most of these riders 100 percent of this is rideable."
During the season riders of all ages and experience levels compete in short races that include both off road and on road sections at the park.
There are also some obstacles that require riders to dismount their bikes. While some may take one look at the course and shake their head, riders say it's worth a try.
"If you sort of relax the bike will steer you the right way," Liddle said. "It's a little bit of freedom, a little bit of fear, a little bit of excitement and a whole lot of fun."
