These are the items that most emergency management officials and the American Red Cross feel are necessary to keep on hand for a grab-and-go kit:

 | | A NOAA all-hazards weather radio |
 | | Flashlight |
 | | Fresh batteries (AA, AAA, D) for the NOAA radio and any battery-powered radios and flashlights |
 | | A properly stocked First Aid kit, with bandages, gauze, antiseptic, disposable gloves, scissors, eye wash, alcohol prep pads and aspirin. |
 | | A 3-to-5 day supply of fresh drinking water with a 3-to-5 year shelf life |
 | | A 3-to-5 day supply of non-perishable foods |
 | | A 3-to-5 day of necessary medications |
 | | Necessary supplies to care for the elderly and/or handicapped |
 | | Baby supplies |
 | | Pet supplies |
 | | Toilet paper |
 | | Plastic rubbish bags |
 | | Duct tape |
It's also important to make sure that a similar number of supplies are made available for children, the elderly and those who need assistance.
