As the troubling economy makes it more difficult to land your dream job, the concept of networking has become a critical tool in the business world. The cliché, "It's not what you know, but who you know,“ is helping many young entrepreneurs gain success.
Networking is not limited to those seeking new jobs. It can be a smart move for anyone looking to gain professional knowledge or get acquainted with other professionals in their industry. It can also be a great way to learn about new products and opportunities.
Networking does not have to be a strenuous task. There are many easy ways to build your contact book, such as the following:
The best way to meet someone interested in your field is to hang out in areas associated with it. Try universities, hospital cafeterias, libraries or cafes. If you spot someone reading about something you're interested in, don't be timid. Smile and meet someone new. They may turn out to be your next business partner or boss.

Whether it is a job club or a special interest club, being around people with similar interests is a great way to make personal contacts. Job clubs offer career tools such as interviewing skills or approaching your boss about your salary.
Get to know your neighbors and even your neighbor's friends. Try to build a relationship with at least one person in each department of your office. You may be surprised which relationships you need in the future.
Being pushy or aggressive and taking advantage of contacts are major turn offs. Networking is a two-way street, so always offer your insight, contacts and services when requesting someone else's. Katharine Hansen's book on networking offers this valuable advice:
Don't make your contact feel like you are wasting their time. Know your purpose for the meeting, do your homework and come prepared with specific questions.
Be confident, but modest. People want to help people who are motivated and strong, not desperate and whiny.
Listen to what your contact has said and write them a thank you letter for their time including somethig specific that they said. They will know you listened to them and respected their time. They will be more inclined to remember you should you ever ask them for a favor in the future.
