Over the centuries, dog breeds do come in and out of popularity, but one breed that has never gone out of the public eye is the German Shepherd.
German Shepherds belong to the AKC's herding group.
They are known for their intelligence and confidence as well as their remarkable courage and loyalty.
These qualities make German Shepherds outstanding herding dogs, as well as seeing-eye dogs, police dogs and valuable members of search and rescue teams.

A German Shepherd can also be a fierce and loyal protector of their home and their humans.
They are at their best when trained for a challenging task or working on obedience with a person who can be a strong leader to match this strong-willed breed.
Shepherds are usually between 22 to 26 inches tall and longer than they are tall.
Their coat is medium length, dense and range in color from black and tan to pale and even white.
To keep them in tip top form, they should be brushed and kept fit with long vigorous walks daily.
If you are an active person and up for a challenge, a German Shepherd may be the right dog for you.
