Xemumba Fest offers fun music from south of the border
10/15/2009 12:27 PM
By: Andy Langer

Xemumba creator Brandon Badillo sits down with Andy Langer.
We’ve just finished up the Austin City Limits Music Festival and Fun, Fun, Fun Fest is coming up in November.

In between those festivals the third annual Xemumba Festival will be taking center stage in Austin. The festival showcases Latin and South American music.

“This particular festival is just a celebration of all the many different Latin and South American cultures that are in those regions south of our borders,” Xemumba creator, Brandon Badillo, said. “I created this festival to just give people a chance to listen to all these different types of music that was created and/or inspired by those regions.”

This type of music doesn’t generally get a lot of attention in Austin, but there is this big scene around it.

News 8's Andy Langer sits down with the creator of this festival to talk about what it means for Austinites.

“A big goal is to help promote these bands and kind of diversify the music scene in Austin and to try to create more attention and more awareness of this world music that we have here in our beautiful city,” Badillo said.

It’s an all day festival starting off with Afro-Cuban styled music. Brazilian Jazz musicians also take the stage early. Other styles of music include Mexican Folklorio, Latin Rock, Gypsy, and a fun blend between Samba and Salsa.

Close to a dozen bands will be performing during the festival in Kenny Dorham’s Backyard, 1106 E. 11th Street. Tickets are $10 online and $15 at the door and all ages are welcome. The festival takes place Oct. 24.

Each Thursday, music critic Andy Langer takes a behind-the-scenes look at the personalities, venues and businesses behind Austin's celebrated music scene in Backstage Pass.

The City of Austin plans to have the Nueces Bike Boulevard opened by late spring. The boulevard would be a multi-use path where car traffic is discouraged. How do you feel about this?
