The new Michael Jackson documentary “This is It” captures rehearsal footage from what would have been Jackson’s final tour.
The film becomes with big questions, but offers no answers. What was going on with Michael that could have led to his demise? How successful would his final series of concerts be?
As a documentary, the film lacks investigation and carries a miniscule narrative. However, as a tribute piece and sensational dance flick, the film carries trademark sizzle.
The most interesting parts of the film were the video vignettes that would have played on the big screen as introductions to Michael's songs.
One was a film noir skit leading into a performance of Smooth Criminal that went off like gang busters.
Director Kenny Ortega assembles a moving portrait of Michael's perfectionist personality and ageless performance.
“This is It” stands as a piece of pop history that satisfies some of the curiosity that surrounds Jackson's last days. Too bad there weren't more close ups.
On the News 8 Scale of one to eight, “This is It” earns a show stopping six.
