Struggling spouses head for paradise in the salty new comedy, "Couples Retreat."
Call it the next level for the relationship of Vince Vaughn and John Favreau, who started out together in "Swingers."
Vaughn and Favreau co-wrote this script along with Dana Fox, the screenwriter of "What Happens in Vegas."
"Couples Retreat" doesn't cover much new territory.
The cast and setting is gorgeously adequate, but the comedy is unexceptional.
It starts with an overly formal power point presentation by Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell, a couple on the rocks.

The pitch seems too good to be true and, much like actual movie, their vacation doesn't live up to its potential.
The four couples are suckered into relationship counseling that brings up more problems than they even knew they had.
Vaughn and Favreua are at the center of most of the comedy and you'll get a few laughs out of the lukewarm scenario.
The material is mainly made up of cliché sitcom antics, with little originality.
At least the scenery is great, most of the time.
On the News 8 scale of one to eight, "Couples Retreat" earns a half-hearted four.
