The rough and tumble world of roller derby takes the spotlight in the new girl power comedy, "Whip It!"
This movie has Austin written all over it, and it's a winning debut for a spunky actress turned director.
Drew Barrymore makes her directorial debut with a funky, fun, coming of age action comedy set in our own back yard.
Ellen Page stars as a small town girl who leaves beauty pageants behind for Austin's wild roller derby scene.
The coming of age screenplay is written by a former Austinite, and is inspired by the Texas Roller Girls.
In this case, Kristen Wiig and Juliette Lewis lead their respective teams into battle. The Hurl Scouts are the Bad News Bears of the league.

Andrew Wilson is there as the jean shorts wearing coach who's a strange fit the role, but he can still gets the point across.
"Whip It" is a likeable movie that could be a lot better with a livelier edit. It's a little flat in places, and several characters are underused.
Make sure to stay for the credits, because the outtakes are a hoot. Some of them should have been kept in the movie.
Still, the talent of Barrymore and Page make this flick one worth taking for a spin.
