Lake Corpus Christi - state's best kept coastal secret
10/18/2009 5:50 PM
By: Texas Parks & Wildlife

While a lot of folks associate the area with the nearby beaches, Lake Corpus Christi State Park offers up some freshwater fun.
Lake Corpus Christi is guaranteed not to sting your eyes.

"It's close enough to the beach but yet far enough from the salt water," Frank Juarez, with the state park, said.

The 21,000-acre lake is the place to go for swimming, boating and water recreation, without all the sand.

"People come out, cool off and do a little bit of swimming, bring the kids out and do some fishing and swimming," Juarez said.

News 8's Paul Brown has more on a special state park and a local treasure.

Deer, rabbit and javelina make themselves at home here, and over 300 species of birds have been documented at the park. Human visitors come for the cool breezes blowing off the lake.

"This here is one of our picnic sites and there are nice picnic sites, nice and shady along the water," Juarez said.

The park's pavilion dates to the 1930s.

"That was where they used to have dances up until the 50s. Still get a lot of old timers come in and say how they used to go to dance on Saturday nights," Juarez said. "Come Sunday there were church services. The dance floor is where they would hold services."

As the weather cools off, winter Texans flock to the park.

If you're looking for a break from the beach, Lake Corpus Christi is guaranteed not to sting your eyes.

"Right now it's about 4 o’clock in the afternoon, nice and quiet. It's peaceful," he said.

The City of Austin plans to have the Nueces Bike Boulevard opened by late spring. The boulevard would be a multi-use path where car traffic is discouraged. How do you feel about this?
I think this is a great idea, we need more roads like this
