Students at Metz Elementary in Austin started hosting an annual event to honor veterans three years ago.
This year's event took place Friday--just one day after tragedy struck in Fort Hood.
The day started off with an assembly. Students sang songs, read poems and performed cheers to thank their special guests.
"The kids are rewarding to talk to and they ask cute questions like 'was the military food yucky?'" Army veteran Cyndi Miller said.
To students, this was about making these men and women feel special and appreciated.

"I hope they had a good Veterans Day at Metz Elementary," second grader Missia Cuevas said.
Some kids were decked out in red, white and blue. Others wore uniforms, just like their military heroes.
"They want to get to know you but they don't want to hear the war stories it's kinda more like 'wow, you're so tall,' Marine corp veteran Jason Denny said.
Even if the talk is casual, the meaning behind the phrase "thank you" goes a long way for these veterans.
"Especially in light of that happened yesterday, when is it not a good day to give thanks to those who serve?" event organizer and teacher Jennifer Atkinson said.
Veterans Day is this upcoming Wednesday.
